Agustin "Augie" Avelleyra Jr., 93, of Fort Dodge, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 28th at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1856. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with Vigil Service at 3:00 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m. all at the funeral home. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Fort Dodge; daughters, Patricia Ann Aslesen (Bruce) of Vermillion, MN; Cynthia Marie Haines (Kirk) of Peoria, AZ; Paula Suzanne Avelleyra (Mike Behlke) of Madison, WI; Martha Avelleyra Powers (Dennis) of Dubuque; Lisa Maria Avelleyra of Iowa City, IA; 8 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sisters, Mary Avelleyra of Fort Dodge; Dolores Murphy of Denver, CO; and his brother, Al Avelleyra of Lansing, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Agustin and Maria (Villegas) Avelleyra; brother, Aurelio Avelleyra and a sister, Teresa Williams. Agustin Avelleyra was born on July 21, 1920 in Kalo. He attended schools here and graduated from Corpus Christi High School. In 1942, Augie enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps serving during WW II until his honorable discharge in 1945. He then attended and graduated from the University of the Notre Dame in 1949. On July 19, 1952 he was united in marriage to Phyllis Johnson and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge. Augie was an International Sales Manager with Fort Dodge Laboratories for over 36 years retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 613, past Fort Dodge City Council Member, Mid-Iowa Marine Detachment, past Chairman of Red Cross, and was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Parish. Augie was an avid Notre Dame Fan. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Timothy Ihrig and the staff of Palliative Care at Unity Point Health and also to the staff and volunteers of the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home for the loving care they provided.
