Anthony Wayne Johnson, affectionately known as AJ and Big Tone, passed away on October 28, 2023, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. AJ was a beloved figure in his community, known for his passion, humor, and loving nature.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 1st from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Laufersweiler Funeral Home. A Celebration of AJ's life will be held on Saturday November 4th beginning at 5:00 PM at Old Boston's in Fort Dodge.
Born on June 25, 1970, in Iowa City, Iowa. AJ was a proud graduate of Fort Dodge Senior High School. His strong work ethic was evident in his long-standing careers at USG, where he served for 16 years, and Martin Marietta, where he dedicated 13 years of his life. He was a respected member of the U.A.W. Local 503-1, contributing significantly to the union's efforts. Family was the cornerstone of AJ's life.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Fort Dodge, and his mother, Mary Johnson of Longville, MN. His legacy lives on in his children: MacKenzie (Justin "J-Bone") Farnsworth of Des Moines, Kyle (Destinee) Johnson, and Cole (Bri Barkema) of Fort Dodge. He was a doting grandfather to his granddaughters Mason and Logan, and MacKenzie's grandchild on the way. AJ also leaves behind his stepchildren: Christopher Polly of Seward, NE, Erika (Nick) Hartwig of Quantico, VA, and Lance Polly of Friend, NE, as well as his step-grandchildren, Asher and Isla. His brother, Robert (Kyndra) Johnson of Longville, MN, will remember him fondly. nieces: Miranda, Addison, Michaela, and Taylor. AJ's dogs, Morrie and Trixie, were his loyal companions.
AJ was preceded in death by his dad Elvin LeRoy Johnson, grandparents William and Iola Johnson, Eugene and Mary Messerly, and great friend Michael Moore.
AJ's life was characterized by his dedication to his family and his love for being a father and grandfather. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, whether it was attending his children's school events and sports games or simply enjoying their company. His passion for sports extended beyond the sidelines, as he coached the North Central Iowa Badgers Baseball team, inspiring young athletes with his enthusiasm and dedication. Living life "full throttle" was Big Tone's motto. He had a zest for life that was contagious to those around him. His love for adventure was evident in his enjoyment in snowmobiling and riding his Harley Davidson with Mary, a pastime that brought him immense joy.
AJ will be remembered for his passionate spirit, his infectious humor, and his loving heart. He was a beacon of positivity in his community and a source of strength and inspiration for his family. AJ was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge #806. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
In the words of his family, "AJ was a man who lived life to the fullest. He loved deeply, laughed heartily, and gave generously. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a life well-lived. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the lives of those he touched.
