A visitation will be at10:00 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at the church. Private graveside services will be at Lost Grove Township Cemetery, Harcourt with military rites presented by American Legion Peterson Post #431, Gowrie. Bud was baptized May 14, 1939, at Gowrie, confirmed May 11, 1952, at Lanyon Covenant Church, graduated from Lanyon High School in 1956 and honorably discharged from the Army Reserves in 1964. He spent his entire life in the Gowrie community, was an active member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion until moving to Friendship Haven Retirement Community in Fort Dodge last year. Bud was united in marriage with Donita Diersen on August 11, 1962, in Lytton, Iowa. They celebrated their 60th anniversary last year. He was a very dedicated and devoted husband and father. They are the proud parents of Doug (Sandy) of Johnston and Barb (Dale) Wetherell of Alta along with grandchildren Ryan of Grimes, Rebecca (Zach) Weier of Sutherland, Adam (Jennifer) of West Des Moines and Ben (Sara) Wetherell of Holstein, great-grandchildren Lane Weier, Elijah Wetherell and Baby "J". Their family also hosted Marisa Torres as a high school foreign exchange student and she has been part of the family ever since. Bud's career began as an apprentice in construction, then started working with his dad in the grain elevator industry where he spent the next 40 years until his retirement in 1998. He was known to be the one to turn on the lights in the morning and turn them off at the end of the day. Bud enjoyed attending his children's events and in later years his grandchildren's. Other than spending time with his family Bud was an avid sportsman cheering on the Cyclones, Hawkeyes, and Cubs while also enjoying the game of golf, pitching horseshoes and gardening. He greatly enjoyed those who played the game the right way. Bud was 'quietly' very competitive and if a score was kept, he wanted to win. However, he was never boastful and preferred to keep the victories to himself. His life can be summed up with 4 Fs: Faith, Family, Friends & Fishing! He always had time to 'drop a line'. Bud has earned a golden fishing rod & reel to be used in heaven for eternity. Bud is survived by his beloved wife Donita of 60 years, son Doug (Sandy), daughter Barb (Dale), grandchildren: Ryan, Rebecca (Zach), Adam (Jennifer), Ben (Sara), great grandchildren: Lane, Eli & Baby J., sister Marilyn Matousek, brothers Larry & Wayne (Rhonda) Johanson, sister in law Betty Diersen and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Dorothy, and brother-in-law Don Diersen. Memorials may be left to the family discretion. Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie is serving the family.
