Cecil A. Nelson, 83, of Topeka, KS formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2013 at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa, AZ. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 25th at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 11:00 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Lynn Bruch officiating. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery with Full Military Rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1856 and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. A visitation will be 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home with a Vigil at 5:00 p.m. Cecil is survived by his wife, Lois; daughter, Tracey Patterson and her husband Barney of Fort Dodge; grandsons, Nick, Andy, and Ben Patterson, 2 great grandsons, step children, Vicky (Franz) Stangl; Rick (Kathy) Fannin; Patty (Alan) Householder; Becky Harmon; Rod (Anita) Fannin; 18 step grandchildren; 10 step great grandchildren; siblings, Beverly Kelling, Carol Hurst, Gladys Riley, Bob Nelson and David Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Audrey, step son-in-law, Tom Harmon, and sisters, Ardis Anthony and MaryAnn Hieken. Cecil Allen Nelson, son of Oscar and Irene (Hagenson) Nelson, was born on June 5, 1930 in Bode, IA. He graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1948. He worked at Tobin Packing (Hormel's) following graduation and remained there for 33 years until his retirement in 1982. After his retirement Cecil worked as a bartender and was a driver for Enterprise for a period of time. In 1950, Cecil married Audrey Hood at Holy Rosary Church and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge. Cecil then served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he was stationed in Georgia. Audrey passed away in 1998. In 2002, he married Lois Fannin in Topeka, KS where the couple made their home. The couple spent their winters in Arizona. Cecil also enjoyed wood working, reading, fishing, and loved playing pool. Besides being an active member of Sacred Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus; Cecil enjoyed volunteering with church bingo, helping with activities in their retirement park, and pool league. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
