Clayton D. Layman

Rockwell City Clayton D. Layman 84, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2021 at his home north of Rockwell City. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 18, 2021 at St. Pauls Lutheran & Presbyterian Church, Rockwell City, with Pastor Jim Davis officiating. Burial of casket will be at Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at the Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the discretion of the family. Clayton is survived by his wife Linda; daughter Angie (Eric) Spake of Sioux City; son Jay (Nicole) Layman of Sioux City; 7 grandchildren; brother Jerry (Sharon) Layman of Rockwell City; 5 nieces and nephews; and other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Elizabeth "Betty" (Winebrinner) Layman; brother Dick Layman; and nephew Christopher Meusburger. Clayton Douglas Layman was born April 8, 1937 at Havelock, Iowa. As a youth, he moved with his family to Corydon, Harcourt, and to Scranton where he graduated from Scranton High School with the Class of 1955. Clayton served in the National Guard for 6 years. On June 6, 1965 he was united in marriage to Linda Meusburger at the Skaraborg Lutheran Church in Piper. The couple made their home on an acreage north of Rockwell City. Clayton operated various businesses in the area including raising livestock, the Rockwell City Poultry Processing Plant, Quality Seed Store, and was an auctioneer for many years. Clayton enjoyed storytelling and was a member of the Storytellers of the Prairie and a founding member of the Story City Storytelling Festival. He also did storytelling at the Iowa State Fair for many years. Clayton was an active member of St. Pauls Lutheran & Presbyterian Church.
