Cornelius "Carney" M. Sherman, 84, of Fort Dodge, passed away Friday, January 15, 2016 at the Marian Home, Fort Dodge. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2016 in the Chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1856 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. A visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary, all at the funeral home. Cornelius Michael Sherman, son of John "Jack" and Emma (Matern) Sherman, was born at home in Wright County on May 14, 1931. Carney farmed from age 18 until 2010. He served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1957. Carney married Kathleen Ann Nilles of Webster City on August 7, 1954 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Webster City. Carney was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Audrey Baker; June Benedict; Rita Ricke; M. Edna Ryan; Sr. Mary Edmund; Doris Cleveland; and brother, Gerald Sherman. Carney is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen; son, Mark (Mary) Sherman of Fort Dodge; daughter, Mary (Jeff) Young of Williamsburg; grandchildren, Kristine (Andy) Mulcahy of Denver, CO; Anna (David) Miller of Churdan; Sarah Sherman and Luke (Taryn) Sherman, both of Fort Dodge; Alayna Young of Iowa City; Erin, Alysha, and Maria Young, all of Williamsburg; as well as five great-grandchildren. Carney was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, life member of the Knights of Columbus, former member of the Des Moines River Valley Antique Club, Fort Dodge Lion's Club, Elk's Club, and Fort Dodge Dance Club. His hobbies included refinishing antique tractors and snowmobiling. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
