Douglas "Doug" G. Laird, 72, of Fort Dodge, passed away on Monday, November 18, 2013 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames after a brief battle with Leukemia. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 22nd, at First Covenant Church located at 201 Avenue H; with Pastor Allan Redenius, officiating. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery with Full Military Rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1856. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife, Margaret, son, Jason Laird and his wife Staci of Fort Dodge; step daughter Corrina Korthals and her husband James of Duluth, MN; step son, Brent Schleuger and his wife Karen of Fort Dodge; grandchildren, Kyle Schleuger, Alex and Kaitlyn Korthals, Annie, Jacob, and Molly Laird; brother, Frank Laird of Cocoa Beach, FL; and his sister, Judy VanKooten of Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Grace (Martin) Laird, brothers, Wayne, Robert, Virgil Jr., and Jack Laird. Douglas Gary Laird was born on April 4, 1941 in Otho. He was raised and educated in Otho. Doug served with the U.S. Army from November of 1963 to November of 1965. He was stationed at Fort Sill, OK and served as the Chaplain Assistant. After serving in the Army, Doug returned to Otho. On September 27, 1969, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ertl Schleuger; the couple established their home in Fort Dodge. Doug worked at Phillip's Middle School where he retired as the head custodial engineer after 36 years in 2005. He served on the Fort Dodge City Council for 2 years and was a member of the First Covenant Church where he was a gifted teacher of God's Word. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
