Elmer H. Flickinger 94, formerly of Harcourt, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at his home in Urbandale. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2023 at New Hope United Methodist Church 4525 Beaver Ave., Des Moines, Iowa followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 7:00 p.m. A light meal will be served. An additional Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, at the Harcourt United Methodist Church, with a Prayer Service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at the Dayton Cemetery with Military Rites by Greenfield Hartquist American Legion Post #699 of Harcourt. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie is in charge of arrangements. Elmer Harry Flickinger was born November 28, 1928, in Burnside, Iowa. He graduated from Harcourt High School. Elmer served in the United States Army from 1950-1952 during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant. On March 1, 1959 he was united in marriage to Theresa Pruismann and the couple established their home on a farm in Harcourt. Elmer also worked for the railroad for 42 years, retiring in 1990 from the Union Pacific Railroad. Elmer continued farming until he was 79. In 2009, the couple moved to Urbandale to be near children and grandchildren. Elmer was a lifetime member of the Harcourt United Methodist Church. Elmer was a longtime member of the Masonic Lodge, a Shriner, and a member of the Greenfield Hartquist American Legion Post #699 of Harcourt. Elmer was a dedicated husband to Theresa just shy of 64 years. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them and beating them at cards. He was a very hard worker, always fixing and repairing anything for neighbors. He enjoyed working with his hands and stayed busy in his woodworking shop during his retirement years. Elmer is survived by his wife Theresa; children, Pearl Flickinger of Seattle, WA, Janet (Roger) Stewart of Maxwell, Bruce (Barbara) Flickinger of St. Charles, Doris Flickinger (Terry Reeves) of Des Moines, and Roger Flickinger of Urbandale; 6 grandchildren, Dean (Jayme) Stewart, Neal (Rochelle) Stewart, Janean (Darren) Struthers, Rachel, Luke, Jake; 5 great-grandchildren, Savannah, Everett, Harvey, Gentry, Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Pearl (Brown) Flickinger; sister Margaret Phillips; brothers, Glen, Robert, and Ray Flickinger; and granddaughter Sarah Theresa Flickinger.
