Eugene V. Baker, 91, of Fort Dodge passed away Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Friendship Haven. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 20th at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Corpus Christi Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1856 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Saturday from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church. The services will be livestreamed via the Laufersweiler Funeral Home Facebook Page. Gene is survived by his sons, Gary (Vickey) of Harlan, Dennis (Jane) of Madrid, Gordon of Cottage Grove, MN, Greg, Doug (Jackie), and David (Molly) all of Fort Dodge; 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and siblings Bonnie Matthys of Sun City, FL, and Karen Johnson of Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Ellen (Allison) Baker; wife, Mildred in 2005; an infant sister, Shirley Baker, and his brother James Baker. Eugene Verlyn Baker was born February 18, 1929 in Pocahontas. As a young child his family moved to Fort Dodge. He attended school and then enlisted in the United States Navy. He served during WWII until his honorable discharge in 1949. On February 6, 1952 he was united in marriage to Mildred Gurnett. Gene worked for the United States Postal Service for over 34 years. He was a member of Holy Trinity Church, the Knights of Columbus, the VFW and NARFE. Gene was also a past president of the APWU Local 317. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golfing, but most of all he loved time spent with his family. In lieu of flowers memorials may be left to Holy Trinity Church or to Hospice of Fort Dodge.
