Gene G. Mackey, 80, of Fort Dodge and formerly of Fonda passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at the Paul J. Baber Hospice Home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Fonda with Rev. Siby Punnoose officiating the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery. A visitation will be Friday 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home, Fort Dodge with a Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Vigil at 6:00 p.m. Gene G. Mackey was born June 24, 1934, in Fonda to Matt and Loretta (O'Brien) Mackey. Gene was educated at St. Columbkille Schools in Varina. Gene worked in construction, carpentry, and farmed in the Fonda area, until his retirement. He was united in marriage to Elaine Elzenga at St. Columbkille Church in Varina on December 29, 1962. The couple established their home in the Varina area and later moved to the Fonda area. In 2011, the couple moved to Fort Dodge. Gene was a longtime member of St. Columbkille Church, Varina; O.L.G.C, Fonda; and most recently Holy Trinity Parish, Fort Dodge. Gene enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He loved to travel and dancing to Polka music. Gene is survived by his wife, Elaine; son, Brian Mackey and his wife Tracy of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Braden and Evan; brother, Henry Mackey and wife Shirley of Laurens; sisters, Harriet Goedert of Varina; Loretta Wolf of Fort Dodge; Pat Erickson and husband John of Fort Dodge and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill, John, Matt Jr., Richard and Garrett; and sister, Rose Kirsch. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
