Gerald A. Schachtner, 84, of Humboldt passed away on Thursday, September 19 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday September 24th at 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church in Humboldt with Father Dan Guenther and Father Thomas Hart co-celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery with military rites provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Mary's Church in Humboldt. Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home is serving the family. Survivors include his wife of 58 years Helen, son Mike (DeDe) Schachtner, daughters Brenda (PJay) Rivard and Grace (Dan) Scholl and his son Allan (Tonya) Schachtner, daughter in law Pauline Schachtner, 16 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, brother Harold and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alois and Margaret (Budden) Schachtner, infant daughter Mary Schachtner, son Mark Schachtner, grandson Cody Schachtner along with his 4 brothers and 3 sisters. Gerald Arthur Schachtner was born on September 16, 1935 in Carroll. His family moved to Lohrville where he graduated from high school. He then enlisted with the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to Lohrville. On February 13, 1961 he was united in marriage to Helen Hartwig at Corpus Christi Church. The couple made their home in Lohrville and then Des Moines for several years before settling in the Humboldt area. For several years Gerald was the accountant/controller for White Transfer and Storage in Fort Dodge until he retired. After retirement Gerald stayed busy with remodeling his home and working with his son Mike at Electrical Advantage. He enjoyed boating and fishing at Crystal Lake, Lake Cornelia and Twin Lakes. Gerald served as an usher at St. Mary's Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He truly loved his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and being a part of their lives and activities. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
