Helen M Whelchel

Helen M. Whelchel, 91, of Fort Dodge, passed away Monday, June 8, 2015, at Friendship Haven, Simpson Health Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, June 12th at 11:00 a.m. Sacred Heart Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will be at Corpus Christi Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home is serving the family. Helen is survived by her children, Judith (James) Kern of Fort Dodge; John (Pam) Whelchel of Urbandale; Linda (Butch) Johnson of Fort Dodge; Karen (Greg) Lombard of Fort Dodge; Kate (Greg) McInroy of Des Moines; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; sisters, Nancy Mabe of Fort Dodge; and Betty Johnson of Fort Dodge. She was preceded in death by her husband, John "Jack" in 2001; daughter, Mary Ann in 1976; parents, Frank and Amelia (Katasabek) Raymond; siblings, Dorothy Porter; Maxine Oberhelman, and Frank Raymond Helen M. Raymond was born August 4, 1923, in Fort Dodge. She was united in marriage to John "Jack" Whelchel at Sacred Heart Church in 1941. The couple established their home in Fort Dodge, and Helen became a homemaker. Helen volunteered her time at the Sacred Heart School, Saint Edmond School, and local nursing homes. She was also a Girl Scout leader and a foster grandmother. Helen was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Ladies Union, and was a former member of Catholic Daughters of America. Memorials may be left to St. Edmond Catholic Schools or to the Lord's Cupboard.
