Helen (O'Hern) Farrell, 98, of Barnum, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2016, at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Church, Manson, with Rev. Brian Danner officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Barnum. Visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. at the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home. Helen is survived by her children, Michael (Shelia) O'Hern of Barnum; Maureen (Mike) Fitzgerald of Fort Dodge; Ronald (Lea) O'Hern of Sioux City; Rita (Denis) Berkemann of Johnston; Tom (Cheryl) O'Hern of Barnum; Terry (Becky) O'Hern of Johnston; Dan (Diane) O'Hern of Eagle Grove; Ann (Bill) Beverly of Ankeny; 21 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Annie (Gappa) Ford; first husband, Dan O'Hern; second husband, Patrick Farrell; and brother, Edward Ford. Helen Marie Ford was born September 9, 1917 in Whittemore, Iowa. She attended the school there and graduated from Whittemore Presentation Academy. She continued her education at Mount Mercy College and later Drake University graduating in 1969. On November 25, 1943, Helen was united in marriage to Dan O'Hern in Whittemore, Iowa. The couple then established their home on a family farm near Barnum. Helen taught schools in Whittemore, Corpus Christi, Fort Dodge and Barnum. Dan passed away in 1976. On June 25, 1983 Helen was married to Patrick Farrell in Barnum and the couple made their home in Pinole, CA. Patrick passed away in 1994 and then Helen returned to Barnum. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
