Herbert S. Conlon, 86, of Fort Dodge, passed away Monday, January 11, 2016 at Friendship Haven Health Center, Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 16th at 9:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:00 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery with military rites presented by VFW Post 1856 and the U.S. Army Honor Guard. A visitation will be on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a K. of C. Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. all at the funeral home. Herbert is survived by his wife, Mary Catherine; children, Margaret Ann Chung of Rockwall, TX; Patrick (Peggy) Conlon of Urbandale; Michael (Debra) Conlon of Urbandale; Colleen (Jeff) Nahnsen of Callender; 11 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ellen (Harrold) Conlon; son-in-law, Jaycee Chung; sisters, Betty Brown; Donna Doughty; Dorothy Ostbloom; and brother, John Conlon. Herbert S. Conlon was born June 28, 1929 in Fort Dodge. He was raised and educated in Fort Dodge, graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1948. On November 14, 1947, Herbert enlisted with the National Guard. He was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Byrne on February 7, 1955 at Corpus Christi Church, and they established their home in Fort Dodge. Herb continued to serve 42 years in the National Guard and Army Reserve. He served on general staff in Des Moines and Fort Dodge and held various positions. In 1982, Herbe transferred to the Army Reserve, retiring in 1989 as a full Colonel. He worked for Hormels for 23 years until retiring in 1982. Herbert served as a City Commissioner from 1970 to 1974, then served as the Mayor of Fort Dodge from 1976 to 1980. He was a member of the Lions Club since 1970, serving over 35 years. Herb served as the District Governor from 1996 to 1997 for the Lions and assisted over 50 Lions Club in Central Iowa. He was a member of Corpus Christi Church, Knights of Columbus Council 613, American Legion, and AMVETS. Herb served on numerous boards and commissions and was a member of many organizations at city, state, and national levels. Herb especially loved and enjoyed friends and family. He treasured time spent with his grandchildren and his wife of over 60 years. Memorials may be left to Lions Club Scholarship Fund, Fort Dodge or to Knights of Columbus Council 613, Fort Dodge.
