Iva Cecilia Flaherty, 92, of Fort Dodge, passed away at the Marian Home in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on Tuesday, September 16, 2014. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and a 10:00 a.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with a rosary 4:30 p.m. and a vigil at 7:00 p.m. Iva Cecilia Chapman was born on March 4, 1922, to Arthur and Mary (Gleason) Chapman of Blairsburg, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams, Iowa. After graduating from Blairsburg High School and Webster City Community College, Iva enrolled at the Iowa State Teachers' College (now the University of Northern Iowa), receiving a BA degree in Business Education in 1944. She taught at Lake City and Sac City high schools for six years. Iva married Hugh C. Flaherty of Fort Dodge, Iowa on June 15, 1950, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williams, Iowa, and they made their home in Fort Dodge. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Diane Flaherty of Fort Dodge; daughters Kathleen (Craig) Donnelly of Hampton; Margaret (Dave) Pfannes of Mason City; Linda Flaherty (Darrin Biggs) of Chandler, AZ; and son Kevin Flaherty (Vicki) of Denver, CO; sister-in-law Marge (Walt) Roelfs of Clive; grandchildren Scott (Adam Foss) Flaherty, Kristen (Matt) Van Vleet, Katie Donnelly, Lindsay Donnelly, Michael (Macala) Donnelly, Jon Donnelly, Jen (Andy) Burke, Sara (Jake) Fleckenstein, Christopher Flaherty, Nick Biggs, Harlie Biggs, Jon Moore, and Samantha Flaherty; great-grandchildren Mason Burke and Hudson Van Vleet, and 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hugh, her son Michael, brother Carleton Chapman, sisters Mildred Barry and Gladys Chapman, brother-in-law Owen Barry, and sisters-in-law Helen Flaherty, Frances Flaherty, Mary Marshall and her husband Dan Marshall, and great-grandson Connor David Burke. Iva was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Rosary Society, the Legion of Mary, the Marian Home Auxiliary and the National Association of Letter Carriers Auxiliary. She was a devoted mother and homemaker, and an active member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
