James Allen Van Horn

August 11, 1947 — March 13, 2022

James A. Van Horn, 74, of Dakota City passed away Sunday, March 13, 2022 at Humboldt Care Center North after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Thursday, March 17th at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Humboldt. Burial will be at a later date. A visitation will be 9:00 to 10:15 AM prior to the start of the service at the church. Laufersweiler Funeral Home is serving the family. Jim was born August 11, 1947, in Fort Dodge. He was raised in Humboldt where he attended St. Mary's School and graduated from Humboldt High School. Jim attended Junior College in Fort Dodge. In 1968, he enlisted in the United States Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry Division. Upon his Honorable discharge, he went to work with his father at Johnny's Mobil, later known as Johnny's Conoco. In 1986 he took over the business until his retirement. He also worked for Ag Parts making deliveries until his illness. In 1972, Jim was united in marriage to Rebecca Omann at St. Mary's Church in Humboldt. They have lived on the corner of Second and Main in Dakota City for the past 50 years. The couple was blessed with three children whom he loved dearly. He was an active member of the American Legion Adams Post 119 for over 50 years where he served as Commander and Adjutant. He was also a member of the VFW for many years. He served on the Dakota City Council for 20 years. He was a member of St. Mary's Church in Humboldt since his birth. Jim is survived by his wife Becky; daughter Jen Kehoe and her children Michaela, Logan, son Thomas "TJ" (Shannon) Van Horn, son Donald "Don" (Hillary) Van Horn and their daughter Allison; sisters Sue (Ron) Sorlien, Diane Messerly, and Shelley (James) Gagnier. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Doris (Meyer) Van Horn. Memorials may be left to family discretion.
