To keep the children together, they moved into the home of their maternal grandmother, Victoria Phelps, in Logan, Ohio, who was living on a Civil War widow's pension. Jayne finished eighth grade in Logan, then moved to Davenport, Iowa, to live with her father, stepmother, and her half-brother, Charles, to finish high school. She attended the University of Iowa School of Nursing, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1937. Jayne married Dr. Norman W. Runge on December 5, 1937. The family moved there until he was assigned to New Guinea in 1944. After the war, the family moved back to Fort Dodge. They were among the founding members of Bethel Lutheran Church, now renamed Good Shepard. In 1956, Doc moved his practice to Gowrie. Jayne worked as his receptionist and gardening partner. They were members of Zion Lutheran Church and she served in many positions on District boards. She also served on the Gowrie Historical Society Board for many years and was a longtime member of the Kensington Club of Gowrie.
