Jerry M. Schafer, 71, of Fort Dodge passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 in Laughlin, Nevada. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, March 2, 2017 in the Chapel of Laufersweiler- Sievers Funeral Home with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Merle Hay Cemetery in Glidden, Iowa; military rites conducted by the Carroll American Legion Post #7. A visitation will be Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Funeral Home. Jerry is survived by his wife, Linda of Fort Dodge; daughters, Michelle (David) Lawton of Fort Dodge; Renee Schafer of Fort Dodge; grandchildren Connor Lawton and Bryn Lawton; 2 step-grandchildren, Craig and Patrick Lawton; sister, Judy Gibson of Carroll; nephew, Troy (Teresa) Gibson; and his niece, Tara (Butch) Weber. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walt and Ella Mae (Rabb) Schafer; and brother-in-law, Denis Gibson. Jerry M. Schafer was born September 18, 1945 in Glidden. He attended schools and graduated from Glidden High School in 1963. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1963-1966 in Munich and Berlin, Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he lived in Los Angeles, CA for couple years. On November 6, 1971, he was united in marriage to Linda Sapp. The couple established their home in Carroll. They later moved to Fort Dodge. Jerry was the Meat Market Manager for many years at Fareway retiring in 2007. Jerry was honored to be the first non-family member to serve on the Fareway Board of Directors. He was an avid sportsman, gun collector, and prairie dog enthusiast. After retirement, Jerry enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, Connor and Bryn. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
