Rockwell City - Joan W. (Carlson) Stumpf, age 88, passed away Monday, July 27, 2020 at her home in Rockwell City. Private Family Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2020 at St. Francis Catholic Church, Rockwell City, with Fr. Lynn Bruch officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial. A Public Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the Church, followed by a Private Family Visitation until service time. Those attending the visitation and service are asked to wear masks and observe social distancing. Burial of casket will be at St. Francis Cemetery. Memorials may be left to St. Francis Catholic Church. The Funeral Service will be live streamed via Palmer & Swank Funeral Home FaceBook page. Joan W. Carlson was born in Otho, Iowa on April 29, 1932 to Tessie (Edstrom) and Emil Carlson. She graduated from Ft. Dodge High School and worked in Ft. Dodge at Sweeney Savings and Loan. She met Dale while square dancing in Ft. Dodge. Joan was united in marriage to Dale F. Stumpf on January 23, 1954 at Corpus Christi Church, Ft. Dodge. They lived in town until Dales parents retired to Rockwell City, when Joan and Dale moved to the Stumpf family farm west of Rockwell City. In 1993, they moved into Rockwell City. Joan spent her life raising 8 children on the family farm and later nurturing her 21 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Joan loved playing cards with friends throughout her life. She would meet with friends during the day while her children were swimming in the R.C. pool. She and Dale played bridge with other couples on weekends. Joan helped, for many years, at St. Francis Catholic Church with funeral meals and other parties. Joan had many hobbies, such as sewing doll clothes, creating ceramic dolls, painting ceramic Christmas Town buildings, building wonderful miniature furniture and dollhouses, many which were auctioned off as fundraisers. She also loved telling stories to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Joan is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dale; children: Paul (Rita) Stumpf of Lake City, Nancy (Russell) Fulton of Omaha, NE, Jane (Wayne) Gundvaldson of Gretna, NE, Alan (Judy Brady) Stumpf of Pine Bush, NY, Pamela (Tom) Pezanosky of Spring Hill, TN, Patrice (Paul) Toledo of Des Moines, Karin Kelley of Lincoln, NE, and Sara (Mark) Shoemaker of Council Bluffs; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Doris Dickerson, Aletha Hayward, and Alberta Carlson. Joan was preceeded in death by infant son, Steven John; brothers, Dean, Ray, and Kenneth Carlson; sister Sylvia Reddie; and son-in-law Shawn Kelley.
