Joe Hock

January 11, 1941 — April 26, 2021

Donald "Joe" Hock, a lifelong resident of Manson, unexpectedly passed away in his home on Monday, April 26th, 2021 at the age of 80. "Papa Joe" is survived by his two sons, David (Maria) Hock, Merritt Island, Florida, Scott (Amy) Hock, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and two daughters, Chloris (Chris) Eggert, Ames, Iowa, Colette (Ryan) O'Donnell, Bettendorf, Iowa; grandchildren, Ryan Hock, Nicholas Hock, Alivia Hock, Cason Eggert, Camden Eggert, Aden O'Donnell, and Reese O'Donnell; brother Ronald Hock and many nieces and nephews. He loved his family more than anything else in the world...except maybe for the Iowa State Cyclones, Milwaukee's Best Light, Black Velvet with water and just a splash of Diet Pepsi, and spending time at the bar with his friends watching Jeopardy. Joe was born January 11th, 1941 in Fort Dodge to Harold and Edna Hock. He graduated from Manson High School in 1959. He proudly served his country in the US Navy as a Seabee. While in the US Navy, he was fortunate to spend time in Okinawa, Japan. He married Patricia Cooper in 1966, and they raised their four children in Manson. Joe was a skilled welder, and in his younger years worked for his dear friend Al Peters. He continued his welding career with Iowa Illinois Gas & Electric / Mid-American Energy for 30+ years, which gained him lifelong friendships. Joe was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. Joe had an unparalleled zest for life that he shared with many. He loved cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones, attending their bowl games, and he cherished that his four kids graduated as Cyclones. He was a loyal friend that was always there when you needed a helping hand or just needed someone to visit with. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Edna Hock and his sister, Donna Gottschalk. A visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Manson. The funeral mass will be at 10:00 am on Friday, May 7, 2021 also at St. Thomas. The funeral will be live streamed on Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home Facebook Page. Burial will follow at the Saint Thomas Cemetery in Manson. Please also come for lunch and a celebration of Joe's life at nowhere other than Joe's second "home" at KC's Halftime Lounge in Manson. Well-wishers are encouraged to write a note of farewell on a Milwaukee's Best Light can and drink it in his honor. The family would like to express a special and sincere thank you to all his friends and acquaintances that kept a special eye out for him.
