John B Sullivan

November 29, 1930 — June 18, 2015

John B. Sullivan, 84, of Fort Dodge, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015 at the Marian Home. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 22, 2015 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be at Corpus Christi Cemetery. A visitation will be Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with the Rosary at 4:30 p.m. and Vigil at 6:00 p.m., at the funeral home. John Sullivan was born on November 29, 1930, to William (Barrett) Sullivan and Florence Morris Sullivan. He married Jo Ann Doyle at Corpus Christi Catholic Church July 5, 1951, and together they raised five daughters and one son. He had 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Ellen (DeFoe); daughters, Mary Jo (Jim) Schulte of St. Cloud, FL; Eileen (Roger) Simonson of Ft. Dodge; Sally (Kent) Mainquist of Minnetonka, MN; Kathy (Gary) Hoeppner of Manson; Joan (Dave) Sullivan-Roy of Castle Rock, CO; son, Joe (Laura Nilles) of Louisville, KY; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; numerous nephews nieces, cousins and in-laws. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Ann; his sister, Dorothy Azeltine; and one great-grandchild. John was employed at Iowa-Illinois Gas & Electric for 42 years, retiring in 1993. He suffered a stroke in 1999 which paralyzed his right side and took away his ability to speak, but his mind and memory remained sharp to the end, as did his devotion to his family. Despite his physical impairments, he cared for Jo Ann at home as her Alzheimer's progressed, then visited her daily at Friendship Haven from 2003 until her death in 2009. This prompted one grandson to remark that he hoped he could become half the man his grandfather is. A family friend stated John's example should be witnessed by marriage prep candidates as an example of what true love really means. In addition to spending weekends at Twin Lakes with his many in-laws, John's interests included classic cars, bowling, pheasant hunting, and watching Iowa State sports. John's family thanks the fantastic staffs of the Marian Home and Windsor Manor in Webster City, as well as numerous home health care providers and Ft. Dodge Hospice, for their kind care and friendship over the past several years. We are grateful that you were there to help him when we could not. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in John's name to the Marian Home.
