John Douglas Spillman

Doug Spillman, 73, of Fort Dodge, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at V.A. Central IA Healthcare in Des Moines. Military Rites will be conducted by the V.F.W. and U.S. Navy Honor Guard on Monday at 4:00 PM with a visitation from 4:30 to 7:00 PM, and Prayer Service at 7:00 PM all at Laufersweiler Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife Julie of Fort Dodge, son Jeremy Spillman of Des Moines, daughter Jamie Spillman of Grimes, stepsons Jason (Stephanie) Bishop, T.J. (fianc Tiffany) Bishop, and Kyle (Ashley) Bishop all of Fort Dodge, grandchildren Madelyn, McKenna, Max, Teryn, Devyn, Jocelynn, and Evelynn, brothers Robert (Claudia) Spillman of Fort Dodge, Gary (Cheryl) Spillman of Hastings, MN, sister Sandy (Lonnie) Johnson of Lehigh, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his beloved dog "Yogi". He was preceded in death by his parents Donald and Beverly (Albright) Spillman, stepdaughter Carrie Bishop, grandson Kinnick Bishop. Doug Spillman was born on September 3, 1949, in Fort Dodge. He was raised and educated here and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1967. In 1969 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy serving during Vietnam until his honorable discharge in 1973. Doug then attended Bemidji State University in Bemidji, MN, with a major in accounting and later graduated from Iowa Central Community College. In 1978 he was united in marriage to Dawn Bittner and to this union there were 2 children born Jeremy and Jamie. The couple were later divorced. Doug worked at U.P.S. from 1978 to 1994 where he ended up in management and accounting. From 1995 to 2013 Doug had his own accounting and tax services; and he also worked at North Central Iowa Turf in Webster City. On January 4, 2008, Doug was married to Julie Millea and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge. He enjoyed working and exercising every day. Doug would often spend time working in the yard and taking care of his flowers, but his favorite thing was time spent with his family and friends. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
