John Edmund Sherman, 68, of Ankeny and formerly of Fort Dodge passed away peacefully on Friday, September 16, 2016 after a sudden and courageous battle with cancer at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was surrounded by his children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews and long-time significant other, Penny. John was born on March 13, 1948 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Gerald and Mildred Sherman and was the eldest of five children. He married Sharilyn S. Stucky and together, raised two beautiful children. He spent the majority of his life farming alongside his father in Fort Dodge. He later moved to Ankeny and worked in the trucking industry. John loved life. He was charismatic, witty, always ready to tell a great joke and had an unshakable faith in God. He loved the outdoors, golfing, dancing, bicycling, playing cards and bird watching. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and was constantly bragging about each of their accomplishments. He lived life to the absolute fullest and set an exquisite example as a father, grandfather and man of faith. John is survived by his significant other, Penny Smith of Ankeny; daughter Jonnell (Todd) Miller of Ankeny; son JG Michael (Jennifer) Sherman of Warrensburg, MO; grandchildren John Taylor (JT) and Ryleigh Sherman of Warrensburg, MO; Abbie Miller of Ankeny; sister Roxanne (Michael) Neuharth of Eden Prairie, MN and their children Natalie, Justin and Colton; brother Steve (Jill) Sherman of Fort Dodge and their daughter Nicole (Brian) Nichols; nephew Anthony Sherman; niece Audra Sherman and many extended family and close personal friends. John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Greg and Randy Sherman, all of Fort Dodge. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 23, 2016 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and then 10:30 a.m. a Mass of Christian Burial will be at Corpus Christi Church with Rev. Patrick Behm officiating. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery. A visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m. the funeral home. Memorials may be made in John's name to the American Heart Association and American Cancer Society.
