John R Hill

John R Hill, formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away on Thursday December 9, 2021 at Pinnacle Elder Group Homes in Muscatine. He was 94. No services will be held. Laufersweiler is serving the family. John Hill was born on May 27, 1927 in Fort Dodge. John graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1945. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago and at Gulfport, Mississippi. On October 15, 1949 John was united in marriage to Joan Cavanaugh at Corpus Christi Church. John worked for the US Post Office in Chicago & Sioux City and then transferred to Fort Dodge in 1952. The couple established their home in Fort Dodge and raised their family there. John retired from the Post Office in 1982. He loved taking family camping trips through the mountains of the West. He also took several canoe trips with friends & family to the Boundary Waters area of Minnesota & Canada. After his retirement he & Joan spent time for several summers in Fraser, Colorado. They also enjoyed several train trips around the country. John enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and especially enjoyed the annual family gatherings at Christmas & at Lake Okoboji. One of his hobbies was building dollhouses, birdhouses, miniature castles and Christmas villages. John is survived by his son Scott (Madelyn Petty) Hill of New Virginia, 14; daughters Cindy (Bob) Weaton of Muscatine and Maureen (Jay) Harding of lowa City; 5 grandchildren & 7 great-grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his wife Joan; his parents David and Olive (Richardson) Hill; and his brother David Hill.
