Lake City - John Henry Sheffield 77, passed away Thursday, October 3, 2024 at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, Lake City. Private Family Services will be at a later date. Laufersweiler's Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City is serving the family.

John Henry Sheffield was born on July 29, 1947, to John E. and Regina M. (Schumpp) Sheffield in Clarion, Iowa. Henry married Virginia Kay Anderson on February 20, 1971.

Henry had a deep interest in American history. He was an endowed life member of the Smithsonian Institution and served on the board of directors of the United States Navy Memorial, where as a volunteer he loved visiting with US service veterans. Henry also loved playing Santa for different charities. His favorite place was at home where he enjoyed cooking, reading, staying in touch with family and friends and playing with his cats. His greatest skill was supporting Virginia in her career and keeping the home fires burning while she was on her adventures.

Henry attended St. John's Catholic grade school in Clarion and graduated from Clarion High School in 1965. He attained a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in political science and history from Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas.

Henry passed away at Stewart Memorial Hospital in Lake City, Iowa on October 3, 2024, at the age of 77. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Regina Sheffield and nephew Joey Sheffield. He is survived by his wife Virginia and his brothers Tom Sheffield of Rock Valley, Iowa and Ed Sheffield of Madison, Wisconsin and 15 nieces and nephews and their families.
