Joseph B. McMahon, 83, of Fort Dodge passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at Trinity Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 22, 2018 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and then a Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the V.F.W. Post 1856. A visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with a Vigil service at 8:00 p.m. Joe is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Debbie Richardson; Cheryl McMahon both of Fort Dodge; Sandy Mercer of Grandbury, TX; Joe (Tammy) McMahon; Cindy McMahon; Kay McMahon all of Fort Dodge; additional family members, David (Becky) Coughlon of Smithville, MO; Courtney Coughlon of Grandbury, TX; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren with two more on the way; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Joan Horn of Fort Dodge; and his beloved dog "Cricket". He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph C. and Inga (Anderson) McMahon and 2 brothers, Danny and Wayne McMahon. Joseph Bernard McMahon was born on January 23, 1935 in Fort Dodge. He attended schools in Fort Dodge. On July 30, 1955 he was united in marriage to Shirley Coughlon. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1955 and served until his honorable discharge in 1957. Following his discharge, he returned to the farm. In 1965, he joined the Fort Dodge Police Department, retiring in 1990. He owned and operated Eilers Hotel and The Cellar Restaurant with his son, Joe. Following a fire in 1994, Joe and his son purchased Budget Host Inn. Joe retired from the business in the late 1990's. He was the official driver for all of his great-grandchildren. The most important thing in his life was his family. He enjoyed hunting and camping. Memorials may be left to family discretion.
