Laurence "Lefty" T Pliner

Laurence "Lefty" T. Pliner, 94, of Fort Dodge passed away Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Marian Home Funeral services will be 9:45 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2015 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Moorland with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Good Counsel Cemetery, Moorland where military rites will be presented by the VFW Post 1856. A visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a Vigil at 7:00 p.m.at the funeral home. Lefty is survived by his children, Michelle Monahan of Otho; Michael (Mary Maggio) Pliner of Bloomington, MN; Maureen (Mark) Walther of Midlothian, TX; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. Lefty was preceded in death by his wife, Rita; parents, Thomas and Annie (Fiala) Pliner; daughter, Mary Jo Pliner; brother, Roy Pliner; sisters, Roseann Ascherl; Laurene Halligan; and great-granddaughter, Emily Ann Bennigsdorf. Laurence "Lefty" Thomas Pliner was born on June 23, 1920 at Elkhorn Township. He was raised there and graduated from Moorland High School in 1938. After graduation, Laurence farmed until entering the army in 1942. He served in WWII and returned farming in 1945. On October 21, 1946, Laurence was united in marriage to Rita Walsh at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Moorland. The couple farmed and raised their family in the Elkhorn Township until retiring and moving to Fort Dodge in 1986. Laurence was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Moorland, ZCBJ Lodge, the Lions Club, American Legion, VFW and belonged to several wood carving organizations including the Dragoon Wood Carvers and Boone Valley Wood Carvers. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
