Marilyn Jo Carlson

Gowrie Marilyn Jo (Mann) Carlson was born July 15, 1933 and passed from this life to the next on Thursday morning, December 6, 2018 at the Israel Family Hospice House, Ames following a lengthy illness. A Celebration of Life Service will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2018 at the Community of Christ Church, Coalville with ministers, Ronald and DeAnne Dunsdon officiating. A private burial will be held at later date. Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Gowrie is in charge of arrangements. Marilyn was born in Moorhead, Iowa to Harold and Alice Mann. The family moved to Gowrie in 1936 and then to Harcourt in 1940. She was united in marriage to Francis Carlson Jr. "Sonny" on November 8, 1953 at the United Methodist Church, Harcourt. They recently celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary. The couple lived in or around Harcourt their entire marriage before moving to the Golden Crest Villa in Gowrie last year. They spent over 24 years as snow birds in Arizona. Marilyn worked for Land-O-Lakes in Fort Dodge and then at Consolidated Co-op in Harcourt and Gowrie. In the fall of 1974, following the death of their daughter Barbie, the couple became foster parents. Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Sonny; son, Randy Carlson of Walker, MN; daughters, Lori (Larry) Rankin of Pleasantville; Tammy Buriak of Florida; grandchildren, Mat (Ashley) Carlson; Aaron (Chong) Carlson; Jennifer (Justin) Lee; Jason (Jenna) Ekstrom; Hayley Rankin; Michelle Pennington (John Bryson) and family; Eric (Leah) Rankin and family; great-grandchildren, Austin, Avery and Aiden Lee. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Harold Mann Jr. and daughter, Barbara Lyn. Memorials may be left to her church, Southwest Webster Ambulance and the Israel Hospice Home, where she received such loving care in her final weeks.
