Mary Carol Schmidt, 87, of Lombard, IL, (formerly Fort Dodge IA) passed away Sunday, May 2, 2021 at Beacon Hill Retirement Community with her children by her side. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 17th at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Church. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday, May 16th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM with a Rosary at 7:00 PM at Laufersweiler Funeral Home. Mary was born on February 23, 1934 and placed in the loving arms of her parents Linus and Irene (Hennessey) Hammond. She is preceded in death by her husband John J Schmidt and her parents Linus and Irene Hammond. Surviving are her three children: Dr. Kevin Schmidt (Peg) of Oak Brook, IL and their four children: Nicole (Jason Aguiar), Katie (Chris Towers), Lisa and Keith; daughters Carol (Steve Cade) of Lombard, IL and Cathy (Don Klink) of Hinsdale, IL and their two children: Elizabeth and Brian. Mary attended the Convent of The Visitation in St. Paul, MN and St. Teresa College in Winona, MN. After college, Mary moved back to St Paul where she met John Schmidt. Mary and John were married Sept 6th, 1958 at Church of the Nativity, St Paul, MN. In 1961, they were transferred to Fort Dodge. In 1970, Mary entered the School of Nursing at Iowa Central Community College and graduated in 1972. She worked at Friendship Haven Tompkins Health Care Center as a registered nurse (RN) for the next 25 years, retiring in 1997. In 2010, Mary moved to the Chicago area to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Mary loved spending time with her family and friends, lunching with The Birthday Group, playing bridge, wintering in Florida and Arizona, traveling to Minnesota and Wisconsin to visit relatives. In addition, she enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint and beading. During her lifetime, she has knitted and crocheted numerous baby blankets, afghans, baby/children's/doll clothes and jewelry, cherished by the many family and friends who received them. Mary touched the hearts of so many with her warmth and kindness. Her beautiful smile, contagious laugh, warm heart and kind soul will be forever and greatly missed by her family and friends. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family (for donation to St Edmond Catholic School Foundation in Fort Dodge, Peace Hospice in Naperville, IL and Beacon Hill Retirement Community in Lombard, IL).
