Michael Sweeney

Michael M. Sweeney, 60, of Fort Dodge, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 6, 2016 at Corpus Christi Church with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will be at West Lawn Cemetery, Lehigh. A visitation will be 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home. Michael is survived by his children, Michael (Brandi) Sweeney of Fort Dodge; Jesse (Mindy) Sweeney of Callender; Breeann Sweeney of Fort Dodge; Alyssa Sweeney of Fort Dodge; 9 grandchildren; brother, Denny Sweeney of Council Bluffs; sisters, Jane (Leroy) Clapper of Dakota City; and Carol (Dave) Steinblock of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his parents, William "Denny" and Mary (Phillips) Sweeney; three brothers, Tom; Joe; and Tim. Michael Matthew Sweeney was born December 8, 1955 in Fort Dodge. He attended schools in Fort Dodge, graduating from Fort Dodge Senior High School. Following his education, Michael worked for Quality Plus. He was united in marriage to JoAnn Nelson in 1975, and the couple established their home in Fort Dodge. To this union, three children were born: Michael, Jesse, and Breeann. The couple later divorced. Michael married Sherlyn McMahon in 1988 and continued to reside in Fort Dodge. To this union, their daughter, Alyssa, was born. Mike also worked at Land O' Lakes and later farmed in the area for a number of years. He and Sherlyn later divorced. In 2008, Mike was forced to retire due to ill health. Mike later resided with his daughter, Breeann, in 2011, whom cared for him. He enjoyed camping and playing the guitar. Mike treasured time spent with his family and friends, and they laughed at his sense of humor. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
