Neal V. Fish

Gowrie Neal V. Fish 82, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Pearl Valley Rehab & Nursing in Gowrie. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the United Methodist Church, Gowrie, with Pastor Susan Rohden officiating. Burial will be at Gowrie Township Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites by American Legion Peterson Post #431 of Gowrie. Friends may call for visitation after 12:00 noon Saturday, June 16 at the United Methodist Church, Gowrie until service time. Palmer Funeral Home, Gowrie is serving the family. Neal is survived by his sons, Michael (Darlene) Fish of Bloomington, MN, and Mark (Nancy) Fish of Wildwood, MO; two grandchildren, Matthew Fish and Elizabeth Fish; and sister Ruth (Larry) Stubbs of Gowrie. He was preceded in death by his wife Arlene; parents, Albert and Myrtle (Carr) Fish; brothers Wayne Fish, Gene Fish, and Donald Fish; and sister Betty Ewing. Neal V. Fish was born January 27, 1936 in Gowrie, Iowa. He graduated from Gowrie High School with the Class of 1954, and received an Associate of Arts degree from Iowa Central Community College. Neal joined the United States Navy in June of 1954 serving in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Neal dedicated 22 years of his life to the Navy. He served sea duty on the U.S.S. Salsbury Sound AV13 for 3 and a half years. On September 30, 1956 he was united in marriage to Arlene Walker at the United Methodist Church in Gowrie. Neal relocated with his family to several locations during his Navy career including Moffitt Field, CA; Okinawa, Japan; Atsugi, Japan; and Brunswick, ME. Neal retired from the Navy in 1976 attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer, and the family established their home in Gowrie. Neal worked for US Geological Survey for 17 years, retiring in 1993. Neal operated his own wood shop where he created commemorative wooden plaques for the community for several years. Neal was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, Fleet Reserve, and the Gowrie Tree's Forever. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
