Raymond Kenneth Veerhusen

September 25, 1921 — December 19, 2013

Raymond K. Veerhusen, 92, of Fort Dodge passed away Thursday, December 19, 2013 at the Paul J. Baber Hospice Home. A funeral service will be Monday, December 23, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Rev. Lyle Hansen of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow at North Lawn Cemetery where full Military Rites will be presented by the VFW Post 1856. A visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Raymond is survived by his children, Kenneth (Wilma) of Cedar Rapids; Rogers of Altoona; Kelly Bender of Fort Dodge; grandchildren, Stacey Anderson of Dike; Nicholas Veerhusen of Cedar Rapids; Jonathan Bender of Leeds, England; Courtney Bender of Fort Dodge; Zachary Bender of Fort Dodge; and six great-grandchildren, Josh, Miranda, Aryiana, Binah, Colin, and Jackson. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma (Wenzel) Veerhusen; wife, Rose; brothers, Donald, Clarence, and Johnny Veerhusen; and son-in-law, Bruce Bender. Raymond K. Veerhusen was born September 25, 1921 in Pocahontas. He graduated from Rockwell City High School in 1940. Raymond enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and served until his honorable discharge in 1945. In 1945, Ray was united in marriage to Rose Scott in London, England. The couple then established their home for a short period of time in Farnhamville and Rockwell City. In 1947, the couple moved to London where they resided until 1949. The couple returned to the United States and established their home in Fort Dodge. Raymond worked for Iowa Electric Supply for 33 years until his retirement in 1987. Ray was a member of the American Legion. He loved gardening and spending his morning walking at the Crossroads Mall. Ray also enjoyed working with his hands doing various crafts, puzzles, and building items from scratch. He especially loved helping his friends and neighbors. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
