Robert H. Onnen

Rockwell City Robert H. Onnen 90, passed away Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at the Sunny Knoll Care Centre. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2019 at the United Methodist Church, Rockwell City, with Pastor Anita Bane officiating. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Church until service time. Burial of casket will be at Rosehill Cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rockwell City Veterans Organization. Robert is survived by his stepdaughters, Angela (John) Akers of Indianola, and Renee Maulsby of Fort Dodge; two grandchildren, Tamara (Jon) Overton of Indianola, and Derek (Sarah) Akers of Beaverdale; four great-grandchildren, Greta, Adaline, Kaitlynn, and Nathan; and other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Irene; his parents, Herman and Adelle Alsop Onnen; stepmother Vera Onnen; and half-brother Paul Owen. Robert Herman Onnen was born January 31, 1929 at Lake City, Iowa. He graduated from Rockwell City High School, with the Class of 1948. Robert attended Buena Vista University. In January of 1952, Robert served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict until his medical honorable discharge. Following his military service Robert returned to Buena Vista University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Robert joined his father and uncle in Onnen Construction Co., later becoming the owner and operator. In 1970, Robert also started working as a substitute rural mail carrier. He retired in 1992. On February 5, 1982 he was united in marriage to Irene Mae Clark Maulsby in Las Vegas. Irene passed away on July 30, 2017. Robert was a member of the United Methodist Church, Rockwell City Lions Club, and the Rockwell City Radio Control Model Airplane Club. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and traveling.
