Ronald Dean Ramthun was born May 28, 1938 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. Ronald lived most of his childhood in Richards, Iowa and on a farm south of Knierim, Iowa. He went to country school in the Rasmuson field for one year, then to Somers for grade school. His junior high years were spent at the parochial school at Immanuel Lutheran Church east of Rockwell City and back to Somers for 9th, 10th & 11th grades. He was in the first class to graduate from Cedar Valley in 1957. On July 31, 1958, he was united in marriage to Charlene Zehr. They spent 52 years together raising their family until Charlene's death on December 15, 2010. In their early married years, Ronald worked at the Moline Turkey Farm, for George Zinnel, Northern Propane Gas Company, East 66 Service and at Walnut Grove Feed Company, before moving to the Zehr Family Farm where he began farming in 1969. Since he never officially retired from farming, he farmed for 51 years. He began Ramthun Trucking, Inc. in 1982 and ran that company for 36 years, and along with his farming operations. Ronald enjoyed baseball, John Wayne and watching his children and grandchildren play sports and other activities. Ronald had a deep love for his family and was a friend to everyone he met. He was a very proud dad. He was also a very proud grandpa and his grandkids were his pride and joy. He was a generous man and was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone who needed it and several stories have been told of when he was in school, how he always made sure no one would bully the little kids. It was important to him to teach his children and grandchildren to put God first in everything and then any troubles would eventually work out.
