Ruth Lucille Smid

Ruth L. Smid, 85, of Fort Dodge died Thursday, March 21, 2019 due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Thursday, April 4, 2019 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Rev. Andrea Kraushaar officiating. Burial will follow in North Lawn Cemetery. A visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the funeral home. Ruth is survived by her sister, Grace Noll of St. Louis, MO and nephews, David Huntley of Bend, OR and James Huntley of Wichita, KS. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter And Hilda (Block) Theis; husband, Russell Smid in 2014; and niece, Elaine Peters. Ruth Lucille Theis was born June 28, 1933 in Fort Dodge. She was raised and educated in Fort Dodge and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High in 1951. On December 10, 1950, Ruth was united in marriage to Russell Smid at St. Paul Lutheran Church and the couple established their home in Fort Dodge. Ruth worked at the Messenger for several years while she and her husband Russell owned and operated Fort Dodge Motel (1958 to 1962). Later they owned and operated various other motels throughout Iowa. Ruth worked for many years at the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, Iowa District West offices where she was highly regarded. She retired in 1998 and started to spend winters in Alamo, TX, where she became a member of the local Winnebago Club. On November 30, 2017 Ruth married Marv Hulse. She was a member of United Methodist Church. Memorials may be left to family discretion.
