Rockwell City Shirley E. Grant 90, passed away Friday, January 24, 2020 at Paula J. Baber Hospice Home, Fort Dodge. A family-conducted Memorial Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2021 at the Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City. Visiation will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home until service time. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions for the purpose of Alzheimer's Disease Research at Mayo Clinic be sent to: Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, 200 First Street SW, Rochester, MN 55901. Donations should note gifts are in memory of Shirley Grant. Shirley is survived by her husband Dean; children, Larry (Mary) Grant of Fort Collins, CO; Barry (Bonnie) Grant of Urbandale, Becky (Jerry) Waller of River Falls, WI, and Scott (Diane) Grant of Algona; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Laura (Flack) Yeager; brothers, Ralph and Donald Yeager; and sister Helen Wilson. Shirley Eloise Yeager Grant was born February 23, 1929 at her Grandmother Flacks house in Churdan, Iowa. She graduated from Farnhamville High School, with the Class of 1946. Shirley received her teaching certificate and taught country school for three years. On March 11, 1951, during a blizzard, she was united in marriage to L. Dean Grant at the United Methodist Church in Rockwell City. The couple established their home on the family farm near Rockwell City. Shirley lived her life with purpose, perseverance and passion, traits she passed on to her children. She was particularly focused on improving the conditions for those with learning disabilities. Shirley was a member of Iowa State Learning Disability Association, Adult and Children with Learning and Development Disabilities, and active in Womens Rights. She worked alongside her husband Dean, helping with the farm work. Shirley was an avid reader, enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens and sewing, had a deep love for music and playing piano, and taking care of her grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
