Our beloved mother, Shirley Ann Strain, passed away at the age of 89 on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Shirley was born on August 22, 1933, to Mont Ralph "Bill" and Agnes (McDonald) Strain in Rodman, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Graettinger, Iowa, and graduated from Graettinger High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to Charles Henry Warren on June 14, 1952, in Webster City, Iowa. They made their first home in Estherville, Iowa, where their first child was born. They then settled in Webster City, where Shirley worked for a local Furniture Store. They lived in Beatrice, Nebraska for a time and were active in the local Jaycees organization. Eventually they ended up in Hastings, Nebraska, where Shirley's activities involved nursing at the Ingleside Psychiatric Hospital, assistant girls track coach, and she spent several years as manager of House of Fabrics store there. While in Hastings Shirley and Charles were divorced. She returned to Webster City where she met and married Dick Hefty. She served as bookkeeper in their Hefty Homes Construction business. Shirley's pleasures included: making porcelain dolls, tap dancing, playing cards, cooking, reading, writing, playing Nintendo with grandkids, teaching grandbabies to crawl, sewing, watching football games, and just cherished spending time with family and friends. Shirley is survived by her daughter Christine (Christy) Warren of Sioux City, Iowa, Son Charley Warren of Sioux City, Iowa and Michelle (Bill) McBride of Lehigh, Iowa, 32 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Agnes Strain, husband Charles Warren, siblings Alice, Rose, Helen, Doris, Lois and Harold, and second husband Dick Hefty. A prayer service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, September 24th, 2022, in the Chapel of the Laufersweiler Funeral Home at 11:00 AM. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM at the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will be held at a later date at Graceland Cemetery in Webster City. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
