Steven Duane Anderson was born on July 5, 1947 in Fort Dodge, IA to Oda and Duane Anderson. He grew up in Gowrie, IA the oldest of 6 children. Steve graduated from Prairie Valley High School in 1965. After high school he served in the Navy as a communications technician, stationed in Honolulu, HI, carrying out various missions and deployments with top secret classification. During his time in the Navy he married Linda Christene Macken in 1969 and had a son, Troy Anderson, in 1971. After his time in the service he returned to Iowa, living in Ft. Dodge, where he attended Iowa Central Community College and then began employment at Centel Telephone Company where he worked as a draftsman and an installer/repairman. In 1979 he and Linda had their 2nd child, their daughter Teresa Anderson. During his employment at Centel in Ft. Dodge he was active in the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union and served as the local president. In 1987 Steve was transferred to Fairmont, MN where he continued working for the phone company, now Frontier Communications, until he retired in 2003. After retirement he moved to Sarnia, Ontario Canada where he was re-married to June Loewenberg and lived there until the time of his death. Steve loved to be outdoors and in nature. Fishing was his most loved hobby and he would spend most of his free time out on the water. It was said that he could catch fish in a mud puddle. In retirement he would track the wind and temperatures to bring in as much Walleye as the law allowed accumulating a freezer full that he would often give away to friends and family. Also for most of his adult life he maintained an extensive garden and was a very accomplished gardener. He loved to watch birds and nature, often hauling truck loads of bird feed from Iowa to Canada so that he could feed the birds, squirrels, and even the opossums and an occasional skunk. Steve enjoyed coming back to Iowa regularly to spend time with his family, including his grandchildren, who he would follow through their various activities and accomplishments. Steve was very proud of his Iowa roots, Gowrie specifically, and enjoyed spending time there when he could.
