Thomas E. Kirby, 72, of Fort Dodge died from Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 8, 2021 at Holy Trinity Church. Burial will follow at Corpus Christi Cemetery with military rites presented by the VFW Post 1856. A visitation will be 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday at Laufersweiler Funeral Home Tom is survived by his wife Mary Lou, children Chad (Renea) Kirby and their children, Thomas, Josh, Jaxsen, and Preston; Matt (Brooke) and their children, Harrison and Calvin; Greg (Jobina) and their children Ignatius, Aianna, and AvaMarie; sisters, Terri and Tom Laufersweiler and Mary Jo Kirby both of Fort Dodge. He was preceded in death by his parents Donald Kirby and Lelia (Stringer) Kirby, sisters, Marlene Lee, Donna Hulett, and brother, Joe Kirby. Thomas Edward Kirby was born March 23, 1949 in Fort Dodge. He graduated from FDSH in 1967 and then attended ICCC. He served in the United States Army as an MP in the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. Tom was awarded the bronze star for his service before his honorable discharge in November of 1970. On October 15, 1971 he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Venteicher and the couple made their home in Fort Dodge. In 1984, they moved to an acreage near Vincent. He owned and operated Kirby Construction for 50 years and was known as a perfectionist. The city of Fort Dodge is a little more plumb and square because of him. Throughout his life he enjoyed gardening and sharing the produce with neighbors, friends, and family. He volunteered by driving the Saint Edmond Wrestling Team and being an active veteran with the VFW Post 1856 and the American Legion Post 491. Tom loved his family, especially his grand kids and will be greatly missed by all. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
