Thomas Paul Steinhoff

Thomas P. Steinhoff, 87, of Fort Dodge passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Marian Home. A memorial service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Rev. Phil Somsen, chaplain of Trinity Regional Medical Center, officiating. A flag presentation will be conducted by the VFW Post 1856 following the service. Thomas is survived by his children, Stephen of Riverton, NJ; Candace (David) Haldin of Barnum, IA; Carolyn Lane of Bothell, WA; six grandchildren, Matthew (Courtney) Brandrup of Eagle Grove, IA; Sarah Brandrup of Fort Dodge, IA; Ben Lane (Tiffani) of Woodinville, WA; Jason Lane (Felicia) of Maple Valley, WA; Bart Brandrup (Jessica) of Hillsboro, OR; and Hedda Steinhoff- Scribner (Kevin) of Portland, ME; 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Pat Groves; Marj Elsen both of Fort Dodge; Marjorie Hewitt of St. Charles, MN and Ruth (James) Lamke of Onalaska, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Maude Steinhoff; and wife, Joanne. James Franklin McGuire was born October 28, 1925 in Iowa. He was adopted at the age of 2 and given the name Thomas Paul Steinhoff. He attended schools in Fort Dodge. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served for four years in the Pacific Theater. During his duty he served as a cook and had gunnery duties. While stationed at Wold Chamberlain Field in Minneapolis he met Joanne Selleck. After Thomas' honorable discharge he was united in marriage to Joanne on November 3, 1946. The couple first lived in LaCrosse, WI where Tom received chef's training at Stoddard Hotel. The family later moved to Fort Dodge, where Tom started his career with Hormel. After his retirement, the couple eventually moved to Missouri for 18 years before returning to Iowa. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove where they enjoyed activities at the Eagle Grove Senior Center. He also continued his hobbies of hunting and fishing with relatives and friends. Tom enjoyed telling Navy stories and spending time with his family and friends. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
