Vernon Halder

October 31, 1938 — January 20, 2024

Vernon Halder, 85, of Fort Dodge passed away Saturday, January 20, 2024 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home.


Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday in the chapel of Laufersweiler Funeral Home. Burial will follow in St. Olaf Cemetery. A visitation will begin 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.


Vernon is survived by his children Amy Halder and Matt Halder both of Fort Dodge. He is also survived by his sister Linda (John) Weiskercher of Spencer, his long-time companion Loretta Brundige of Fort Dodge and her children Bill (Tina) Brundige of Beloit, WI, Laurie (Darrel) Lagerstrom of Fort Dodge, Rob (Lori) Brundige of Byron, MN, and Jeff (Kim) Brundige of Badger, 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his parents Ellis and Ellen (Peterson) Halder, son Scott Halder, first wife Mary Alice Nielson, wife Janet Halder, brothers Harvey, Marvin and infant brother Joseph, two great-grandchildren, and long-time friends, Bob and Ulla Sanders.


Vernon Ellis Halder was born October 31, 1938, in Pocahontas County, Iowa. He was raised on his parent's farm in Fonda. He attended Varina and Pocahontas schools and graduated from Fonda High School. Vernon worked as the parts manager at RB Clark before moving onto become the parts manager at Levein Chevrolet later known as Morrissey Chevy. He also worked for Hormel’s and when the Fort Dodge plant closed, he moved to Fremont, NE to work for the plant located there. He returned to the area and worked for Electrolux and eventually retired. Vernon enjoyed playing cards especially “Pitch” as well as processing deer and cattle with his good friends Bob and Ulla Sanders. He loved deer and pheasant hunting, going to area casinos, trips to Las Vegas and Canada and attending local parades with his companion, Loretta. He always attended grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s birthday parties and graduations.
