Rockwell City - Viola M. Bahls, 89, passed away Saturday December 10, 2022, at the Rehabilitation Center of Allison, Iowa. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 15, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, east of Rockwell City, with Pastor Chadric Dietrich officiating. Burial of the casket will be Rosehill Cemetery, Rockwell City. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday until the time of the service at the Church. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Viola M. Bahls daughter of Fred and Clara (Volk) Bahls was born July 9, 1933, at Rockwell City, Iowa. She lived the first years of her life on a farm near Rockwell City. She was junior in High School when her family moved to town. Viola graduated as the Valedictorian of her high school class in Rockwell City. Viola then graduated with High Distinction with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, NE. She received her Master of Education from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Viola taught Sunday School and also taught the teachers about the coming lessons. Viola taught at Immanuel Lutheran School in Rockwell City from 1951 to 1959; St. Pauls Lutheran School in Fort Dodge from 1960 to 1963; Trinity Lutheran in St. Joseph, MI, from 1964 to 1968; Concordia Teachers College in Seward, NE from 1968 to 1975; and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, from 1975 to 1999. Viola also coached sports including softball, volleyball, track, basketball, and field hockey. She was a member of various organizations, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance, Central District AAHPERD, PHI DELTA KAPPA, AIAW of NE, Nebraska AAHPERD, Physical Central Association for Physical Education in Higher Education, AAHPERD Playground Safety Committee, and the Lincoln Board of Women Officials. Viola served as the Secretary of NAHPERD for 14 years, Archivist for NAHPERD until her retirement, and was the Chair of CDAAHPERD Necrology Committee. Her colleagues across the state and district were amazed at the dedication she showed her profession and the individuals that she was in contact with her. Viola received many awards from these organizations. Viola was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, sister Mildred Hoare and her husband Francis Hoare, and nephew Michael Hoare. She is survived by her sister Norma Scroggin and her husband Lyle, seven nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
