Virginia R. Barrett, 89, of Fort Dodge, formerly of Moorland, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. Funeral services will be 9:45 a.m. Saturday, August 18th, 2018 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home and then a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Moorland with Msgr. Kevin McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Good Counsel Cemetery, Moorland. A visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home, with Catholic Daughters of America Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. all Laufersweiler Funeral Home. She is survived by her seven children: Steve (Shelley) Barrett of Moorland, Bob (Tamara) Barrett of Waukee, IA, Barb (Jerry) Streit of Gilbert, AZ, Bernie (Liz) Barrett of Belmond, IA, Joe (Jeanne) Barrett of Des Moines, IA, JoAnn (Ralph) Harper of Livingston, MT, and Betty (Keith) Stuhrenberg of Barnum, IA, 21 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. Brothers Edward Crawford of Waite Park, MN, Leo (Shirley) Crawford of Rochester, IL, Sisters Kathleen Knox of Hermantown, MN, Patricia (Lloyd) Schreier of Manson, IA, Judy (Tom) Roberts of Hernando Beach, FL, and Joan (Jack) McMartin of Castle Rock, CO. She was preceded in death by her husband James of 67 years, parents William and Catherine (Gavigan) Crawford, daughter Dorothy, son Richard, granddaughter Theresa Barrett, brothers-in-law Francis Barrett and Allen Knox and sisters-in-law Rose Lee Crawford & Marion Crawford. Virginia Rose Crawford was born January 7, 1929 in Fort Dodge. She graduated from Barnum High School on May 2, 1947. She married James Bernard Barrett January 7, 1948 at St. Joseph Church in Barnum. The couple established their home on the family farm South of Moorland, moving to Fort Dodge in 2011. She lived and worked on the family farm in Moorland. She worked for Lazy Ike's for 8 years until it closed. She cooked for 39 years for different business's including the Country House Truck Stop, Village Inn, Hickory House, Knights of Columbus, and Lehigh Senior Citizens. She served as the first female President of the St. Edmond Athletic Booster Club and was instrumental in forming the girls' softball program. She also served as president of the St. Edmond Band Boosters. She was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Daughters of America Court #216 and served as Grand Regent of the CDA. She was a member of the Moorland Rosary Society serving as President for several years. She portrayed Mrs. Santa for Mainstreet's Silver Bell's on Central for several years and worked on Operation Christmas for many years. She enjoyed cooking and sewing all her children's clothes when they were growing up. She enjoyed her hobby of embroidering for all her grandchildren and making table clothes for their weddings. She enjoyed going to all their school and sporting activities. After their retirement Jim and Ginny could be seen at HyVee every day for the morning coffee club and then at JaMars for noon lunch with all her friends. She was a member Our Lady of Good Counsel in Moorland. After retirement they traveled to Ireland and Rome and took many bus trips around the United States. Memorials may be left to St. Edmond Catholic Schools.
