Wayne Emerson Arends

Wayne E. Arends, of Fort Dodge passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014 at his home. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Shepherd of Otho United Methodist Church officiating. Military Rites presented by the VFW will follow. A visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Wayne is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Ron of Manson; Jim (Linda) Lehigh; Don (Jodi) of Duncombe; son-in-law, Brad "Steve" Lennon; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and brother Robert (Gladys) of Slayton, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Edith (Goodyear) Arends; daughter, Laura Lennon; granddaughter, Shawna Philips, and sister, Marlene Van Rees. Wayne Emerson Arends was born February 12, 1934 in Sheldon, Iowa. He attended country school in the Sheldon area and later attended high school in Sanborn and Sheldon. In 1951, Wayne enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge he returned to the Sheldon area, where he began to work as a farmhand. On October 15, 1954 he was united in marriage to Shirley Pap. Wayne continued to farm while the family moved from Sheldon to Barnum to Duncombe and then eventually settling in Fort Dodge in 1967. Wayne later worked for Webster Country, retiring in 1996. Following his retirement, Wayne and Shirley enjoyed their retirement in Choctaw, Arkansas. Wayne was a lifetime member of the VFW. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and being outdoors. Above all he loved his family dearly. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
