Rockwell City Weston Alan Thompson 92, went home to the Lord on Monday, April 3, 2023. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the United Methodist Church, Rockwell City, with a one hour visitation prior to the service and Rev. Dan G. Fernandez officiating. Burial will be at Lake Creek Cemetery, southwest of Rockwell City, with Military Graveside Rites by Amvets Post #41 of Rockwell City. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 7, at the Palmer & Swank Funeral Home, Rockwell City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to Calhoun County Historical Society, RC United Methodist Church or Gideons International. Weston is survived by his children, Carol Thompson of Rockwell City, Shirley (Mark) Neukom of Crystal, MN, David (Marla) Thompson of Denham Springs, LA, and Kathy (Bill) Jurries of Rockwell City; 9 grandchildren, Weston, Thomas, Amy, Eva, Marshall, Tony, Blair, Brooke, and Katlin; 13 great-grandchildren; brother Donald Thompson of Knoxville; sister Aleene Maquire of Rockwell City; and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary; his parents, Clarence and Edna (Wolff) Thompson; and brothers, Robert and Blake Thompson. Weston Alan Thompson was born February 23, 1931 in Mitchell, South Dakota. The family moved to Rockwell City in 1933 and lived southwest of town on the family farm. Weston graduated from Rockwell City High School with the Class of 1949. He served in the United States. Air Force from 1950 and was honorably discharged in 1953. On June 30, 1953, he was united in marriage with Mary K. Heideman. He worked as assistant manager at Farmers Coop Elevator before starting farming in 1956. Weston loved giving back to his community and served as a leader of many organizations, including Calhoun County Historical Society, Calhoun County Museum, Lions Club, United Methodist Church, Soil Conservation Board, Jaycees, Coop Elevator board of directors, local ASC committee, and was active in Gideons International. In 1992, he retired from farming. In 1993, he traveled to Ukraine as an agricultural advisor to teach modern farming techniques to Ukrainian farmers in the post-Soviet era, and later wrote a book about his experiences. Mary passed away in 2015. Weston enjoyed flying his plane, league bowling, golfing, traveling and restoring old cars. He will be laid to rest in the Lake Creek Township Cemetery, surrounded by the farm he called home for most of his life.
