William S. Doan

June 26, 1940 — September 24, 2015

William (Bill) Sayles Doan, 75, of Fort Dodge, IA passed away in his sleep at home on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015 after a long term deterioration of his health. Born on 26 June, 1940, he was adopted shortly thereafter by the late Lyle and Katharine (Sayles) Doan and brought to live and grow up on a farm on the northwest side of Ft Dodge. Bill attended a one room farm school house in his early years and graduated from Fort Dodge High School. He attended Northwestern University out of high school and lived in Chicago, IL for a number of years before he returned to Fort Dodge. Bill's interests were extremely varied and he became deeply involved in the arts, including painting and photography. He has several pictures displayed in the Chicago Art Institute. He wrote articles for a number of magazines, and was a major contributor for a book which provided essays and a pictorial history of Ft Dodge (A Book of Days). His life was centered on the arts, his collections of historical pictures, other collectables and he had a keen interest in politics. Bill is survived by his sister, Lyla K. Hermans of Kenosha WI. We would like to thank Palliative Care at Unity Point Health for providing the support and health care which helped Bill to feel better and to be active during his last few months of life. We would also like to thank Pastor Darensbourg and the parishioners at the Second Baptist Church for welcoming him to their congregation and helping him find emotional peace. A visitation will be held on Saturday, Oct 3, 2015 at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. Following the visitation, there will be a Memorial Service at the Second Baptist Church starting at 1 PM.
